Feeling gloomy?
In the midst of election season, after record rainfall this October, living in the Pacific Northwest can make anyone feel down.
Fear not- remember that there’s always sun after the rain.
Inspired by the famous children’s book ‘Frederick – the Mouse‘, here are some of our most sunniest photos of 2016, helping us remember the good times.
I welcome you to dive in, browse the beautiful “blue bird” day, dream of that warm sunshine, feel refreshed, rejuvenated and assured that there’s always sunshine after the rain. Always!
On the slopes of Mt. Ellinor, on the southeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula above Hoodsport, a family of goats is grazing in the summer sun. Mighty Mt. Rainier is looming in the distance, beyond the Hood Canal and Puget Sound.
Above Hoodsport, this picture was taken on the summit of Mt. Ellinor with views of it’s bigger neighbor Mt. Washington. A somewhat hidden traverse connects the two mountains, which is still on my bucket list.
One of the two popular lakes named Flapjack Lakes, these lakes sit above Staircase in the Olympic National Park. It is, for many, a destination in itself, but with Glady’s Divide just a couple miles further, don’t stop exploring here.
The Wonderland Trail passes over many bridges, and the Tahoma Creek Suspension bridge is one of the most stunning, with the glacier runoff gurgeling beneath. The summit of Mt. Rainier is looking above the horizon.
While at Mt. Rainier National Park, all eyes are usually fixacted on the white ghost looming in the distance. From The Burroughs, above Sunrise, you can get incredible views of the mountain and of her surrounding glaciers. This shot is of Little Tahoma Peak, an imposing mountain in itself, but somewhat dwarfed by the giant Mt. Rainier next to it.
Above popular Paradise at Mt. Rainier National Park, the wildflowers give the place it’s name. In late Summer, the meadows explode with color, blanketing the subalpine hills in the most splendid display of wilderness expression.
One of the most famous shots of Mt. Rainier is Myrtle Falls. Offers stunning views and perfect photo opportunities, don’t miss this stop.
When venturing into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in the Central Cascades near Leavenworth, WA., Dragontail Peak rises above Colchuck Lake. This marks the entrance to the incredible Enchantments, which you reach Aasgard Pass shown on the right, next to Dragontail Peak.
Across the border to our north, in the outdoor Capital of Canada, Squamish BC, home of the famous Squamish50 trail races rises the imposing Stawamus Chief. The peak marks the skyline and inviting climbers, trail runners, and outdoor lovers from all over to world.
High above Whistler, the views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers leave you speechless every way you turn. In the distance rises the famous Black Tusk in the center of the image, with Mt. Garibaldi and its vast glacier fields to the left.
From the mountain peaks we head to the rugged ocean beaches of Olympic National Park. Kalaloch Beach is world famous for it’s couragous tree defying the odds and weathering every storm rolling over the Pacific Ocean.
Ruby Beach, oh Ruby Beach. A place like no other. Seastacks, tidepools and sunset to make you never want to leave this place again. Worth the drive every single time.
Still with me? This is clearly not a picture of mountains, blue sky and beautiful panoramas. Schnitzel and Poutine is the best after-hike meal. Served al fresco, in the warm summer sun, washed down with a cool beer, it is the perfect end to a summer day. Remember summer?
