Olympic National Park Pavement Projects: 2017 Edition

28 April 2017 | Episode |

That’s gotta be an Olympic tongue twister, right?

Joking aside, ONP will be fixing roads and you should be aware of what, which, when, and where. Affected areas are: Quinault, Kalaloch, Hoh and Mora areas. This project might take awhile, in fact completion time is forecasted to be mid to end of August of 2017. This is not counting the construction projects occurring all summer around Lake Crescent, which will make travel around the northern peninsula slow at best.

Here’s the timeline for the first three weeks:

  • May 1 through May 5 – pavement patching along the Quinault North Shore Road, July Creek Picnic Area Parking, and the Quinault Ranger Station.
  • May 8 through May 12 – continuation of pavement patching and beginning of crack sealing and cleaning along the Quinault North Shore Road, July Creek Picnic Area Parking, and the Quinault Ranger Station.
  • May 15 through May 19 – pavement patching, crack sealing, and cleaning at the Kalaloch Information Station, the Utility and Residence Road, and the Kalaloch Campground.

When driving these sections be aware that roads will be reduced to one travel lane while the contractor is working and flaggers and pilot cars will be onsite to assist with traffic. Delays of up to 15 minutes should be expected.

“We apologize for the short-term inconvenience caused by this project, but look forward to an improved driving experience for park visitors,” said Olympic National Park Acting Superintendent Lee Taylor. “We ask for patience as we complete this project.”

There’s sun in the forecast, don’t let a couple pavement projects hold you back. Grab you dusty gear from your garage and head out and explore. Now more than even our public lands need us and we need them!
