This coming Saturday, September 26, celebrate National Public Lands Day by heading to a national park to play, learn, serve, or work. The 22nd annual event will feature free admission to every National Park Service site, as well as special activities and volunteer work projects across the country.
Below is a list of awesome projects in our area:
Join the WTA to work on making the hike up a bit more enjoyable through annual maintenance efforts. We’ll work on improving several switchbacks, clearing the corridor of brush, improving drainage, and fixing any damaged tread.
The 16th Annual Dungeness River Festival on Sept. 25th-26th, 2015 (10 AM – 4 PM) is a celebration of the Dungeness River and its Watershed (much of which is on land managed by the U.S. Forest Service). Many natural resource agencies participate in the festival including Nation Park Service and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. This year the festival’s theme is history; celebrating the 100th anniversary of the railroad bridge. The Olympic National Forest booth will have historical photos on display, information and activities about pollinators, and details about the fire season.
Come help the Olympic National Forest restore the historic Hamma Hamma Cabin! Projects at this much loved cabin include trimming brush and clearing debris, painting, cleaning out the garage and much more.
Come work in the wonderful Botanical Gardens at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks.
This year, the event will be based in the Sunrise area with a variety of projects available for all ages, ranging from revegetation of native plants in the Sunrise subalpine meadows (suitable for all ages) to working on trail repair projects in the area.
Help restore this well loved portion of the Wonderland Trail that traverses through scenic Summerland.
The City of Olympia Parks, REI and Stream Team are partnering to host a fun and exciting stewardship work party for National Public Lands Day that the whole family will love.
